Metal on Metal Hip Replacements Pose Health Risk

According to medical experts, a medical study underway is expected to reveal that side effects of metal-on-metal hip replacements can cause genetic damage, which could lead to an increased risk of cancer. Furthermore numerous studies have also revealed that metal on metal hip implants can lead to general health problems, such as neurological disorders and heart issues, which could last for years.

Recent studies have shown that as a result of the metal rubbing against the metal small fragments of cobalt are absorbed into the body tissue and entering the blood stream. Presently many hip implant manufacturers such as Depuy, who is owned by Johnson and Johnson, are facing lawsuits regarding these defective hip implants. As a result of the dangers posed by the metal on metal hip implants, the FDA has asked that manufacturers of metal on metal hip implants to research how much metal is released into the body as a result of these products and what the long term side effects maybe.
